| Conrad Beck, b. Lohn, Canton Schaffhausen 16.6.1901, d. Basel 31.10.1989. A composer of great economy of means and formal concision, Beck acquired his early training in Paris. Closely associated with the school of Roussel and Honegger, he developed their neo-baroque manners in a direction of his own that reconciled Teutonic and Latin spirit in a sequence of string quartets and orchestral works. In his postwar period Beck deliberately simplified his style even further, occasionally admitting folksong elements into his music.
