Franz Berwald Life

The Swedish composer and violinist, Franz Berwald, descended from a family of musicians of remote German origin.

Although generally speaking his music failed to impress during his lifetime, he is now regarded as Sweden’s greatest 19th century composer.

Franz Berwald Works

Berwald left four symphonies of which only the first, known as the Sinfonie Sérieuse, was performed in his lifetime.

The third, the Sinfonie singulière, remains the most popular.

The second is known as the Sinfonie capricieuse and the fourth originally as Sinfonie naive.
