Boris Blacher was born in China, but returned to Germany where he worked as a teacher of composition in Berlin and later in Dresden. His career was interrupted by the intervention of National Socialism, but resumed in 1945. He was greatly influenced by French composers, Les Six in particular. Blachers style is mainly tonal, although in later life he experimented with serialism. |
| The work that established Blacher on the international scene was his Variations on a Theme of Paganini, an orchestral work based on the theme from the 24th Caprice of the great virtuoso violinist Paganini, a melody used by Brahms, Rachmaninov and others for a similar purpose. |
