John Bull Life

John Bull was among the most distinguished English keyboard-players of his time, and his career forms a link with the developing keyboard tradition of the Netherlands.

Bull was in the service of Elizabeth I and James I.

In 1613, to avoid various charges brought against him, he left England never to return.

He went first to Brussels and later became organist of Antwerp Cathedral.

He was known as an organist and a virginalist and as a maker of both instruments, the latter being a form of keyboard instrument with a mechanism for plucking rather than hammering the strings.

John Bull Works

Bull wrote keyboard compositions based on both sacred and secular models.

- MIDI FILE - The King's Hunt (4'12'')

His best known work is The King's Hunt, with a series of dance movements, fantasias and song-variations, some of which make considerable demands on the performer.
