One of the outstanding German conductors and pianists of his time. Von Bülow studied piano with Liszt, whose daughter Cosima he married. She later divorced him to marry Wagner. Von Bülow's compositions for piano are technically demanding. His works include many editions of keyboard works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Cramer, Domenico Scarlatti, Weber and others.
