Italian by birth, Castelnuovo-Tedesco studied piano and composition at the Florence Conservatoire. He was a romantic composer in the tradition of Respighi and Richard Strauss and his music is warm and graceful, often virtuosic, and direct in its appeal to performers and audience. His Jewish origins forced him to move to the United Sates in 1939. His works are still largely unpublished and include eight operas, many film scores, ballets, oratorios, overtures, songs and chamber music. |
Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote several choral works based on Old Testament texts and a "Sacred Service" for the Sabbath Eve. His songs include 33 attractive settings of Shakespeare which have won wide approval. He made particularly useful additions to the solo guitar repertoire, notably in two concertos for solo guitar and one for two guitars, as well as a Capriccio diabolico, a tribute to the violinist Paganini. |
