Ernö Dohnányi Life

Outstanding Hungarian pianist who opted for further musical study in Budapest rather than, more conventionally, in Vienna, setting an example that was followed by his younger contemporary Bartók.

Dohnányi was widely respected in Hungary and became an influential tutor at the Budapest Academy, despite difficulties with the régime.

In 1931 he was appointed director of the Hungarian Broadcasting Services.

Due to his opposition to the association of Hungary with National Socialist Germany, he spent the final years of his life in America where he became professor of music at Florida State University.

Ernö Dohnányi Works

Dohnányi was a versatile composer, continuing existing traditions of music.

He became noted for his piano compositions, including Ruralia Hungarica, Four Rhapsodies, and Humoresques.
