Dragonetti is considered as the most famous double bass player in the instrument's history. His career began in his native city of Venice and continued through the various courts of Europe until his arrival in London, where he was held in the highest favour. Here he collaborated with Mendelsshon, Liszt, Rossini and Paganini. He was also on very friendly terms with F.J. Haydn and Beethoven. He was a great virtuoso with an astounding bowing technique that enabled him to develop a percussive staccato hitherto unknown.
