| Russian composer and pianist who studied at the Moscow Conservatoire with Safonov and at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire with Rachmaninov. Grechaninov left Russia in 1922 and settled first in Paris and then in the United States where he obtained American citizenship in 1946. He was a prolific and versatile composer and his compositions continue the traditions of an earlier generation.

| Grechaninov wrote five symphonies, the first two before the Russian Revolution. His Messa Oecumenica (1943) for solo, choir and orchestra was intended to bridge the cultural divide between the Russian Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Chruches.
