Grètry, throughout the late 18th century, was the dominating force of French "opèra comique", and contributed substantially to the development of French opera as a whole. He works in Liège et Paris, and he was inspector of the Comèdie Italienne, Royal Censor for Music and Director of the Queen's Private Music, and - after the Revolution - member of the Lègion d'honneur. |
Grètry's supremacy in 18th century French comic opera is due to his singular attentiveness to sung declamation: the Italian influences of his early musical education were modified subsequently by his skilful assimilation of the ideas of the progressive literary circle in which he developed. He wrote Operas (Zemire et Azor, La vendemmiatrice, Le magnifique, Matroco, Aucassin et Nicolette, Andromaque, Guillaume Tell, Lisbeth, Le connaisseur, Roger et Olivier, Iphigènie en Tauride, Zimèo, etc.), Romances and other works (vocal and strumental). |
