Joseph Lanner Life

Together with the elder Johann Strauss I, Lanner laid the foundations of the classical Viennese waltz.

Taking Weber's "Aufforderung zum Tanze" as his principal model, Lanner reduced the considerable number of waltzes still found in Schubert to an average of five, prefaced the set with a slow introduction often having a programmatic character and concluded it with a coda usually made up of reminiscences of the previous waltzes.

He wrote Waltzes, Galops, Ländler, Mazurkas, Marches and other Dances.
