Franz Lehár

| Hungarian by birth, Franz Lehár is known as the foremost composer of 20th century operettas. He began his career following in his father’s footsteps as a violinist, bandsman and conductor. Lehár was encouraged by Dvorák to write music and his work is greatly influenced by that composer. At the beginning of the new century he moved to Vienna where, in 1902, he won gratifying acclaim in the theatre and where, in the following years, he revived the operetta and provided music especially written for the tenor Richard Tauber.

Lehár wrote nearly forty operettas. By the far the most popular and best known is Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), first staged in Vienna in 1905.
