| The Belgian composer, Guillaume Lekeu, studied in Paris with his compatriot Cèsar Franck and with Vincent d'Indy. His career was brusquely interrupted by illness and he died of typhoid fever at the age of 24. |
Lekeu is best remembered for his G major Violin Sonata, an intensely lyrical work, and his sonata for piano, with a sonata for cello and piano that was completed after the composer's death by d'Indy, who also completed Lekeu's unfinished Piano Quartet. He also left a completed piano trio. Vocal music by Lekeu includes settings of his own words, notably the Trois poèmes (Three Poems). |
