Sergei Michailovich Liapunov

Russian pianist and composer who studied composition under Tchaikovsky and Taneyev at the Moscow Conservatoire. Later he moved to St. Petersburg where he came under the direct influence of Balakirev, the dictatorial leader of the Russian Mighty Handful. Lyapunov’s compositions owe much to his familiarity with the traditional Russian folk songs. MIDI FILE- Lesghinka (6'49'' )In 1910 he was appointed piano and theory tutor at St. Petersburg Conservatoire. He left Russia in 1919 and, after touring extensively as a conductor and concert pianist, he settled in Paris where he died in 1924.

He wrote extensively for the piano, with an impressive set of Twelve Studies completed in 1905 and a number of character pieces, in which his interest in Russian folk songs is often apparent.
