Leonardo Vinci was in 1719 "maestro di cappella" to the Prince of Sansaverio in Naples. His operatic output falls into two parts: "commedie" in Neapolitan dialect and "opere serie". Vinci was one of the first Italian composers to write ritornellos, consisting af agitated arpeggio figures, propelled by the momentum of the harmony or by a crecendo rather than by the flow of a melody.
