| Egon Wellesz, b. Vienna 21.10.1885, d. Oxford 9.11.1974. Though chiefly influenced by German late-romanticism, Wellesz absorbed a variety of influences: Byzantine chant, 17th-century opera and other theatrical and religious impulses. A composer of opera, symphonies and string quartets, he was also a distinguished academic who settled in Britain and became Professor of Music at Oxford University.
