Riccardo Zandonai Life

Was one of the last of the Italian verismo opera composers.

He studied with Pietro Mascagni at Pesaro Conservatory, graduating in 1902; in 1939 he became its director.

He wrote some instrumental compositions, mainly in his later years, and also choral works, songs, and an early film score.

Between 1908 and 1933 he wrote the ten operas that constitute his main achievement.

Although the sixth, Giulietta e Romeo (1921), achieved some acclaim, the only one of his operas still heard with any frequency is his fourth, Francesca da Rimini (1914), based on Gabriele d'Annunzio's treatment of a story from Dante. John W. Barker
