Compositeur américain, n. New York, 1908: il a été l'élève de Walter Piston à Harvard et de Nadia Boulanger à Paris.

Il utilise volontiers des rythmes asymétriques dans un style atonal.

On lui doit notamment un Double Concerto pour clavecin, piano et orchestre (1961), une Symphonie de 3 orchestres (1977), Syringa (1978) et Violin concerto (1990).

En 2000, il compose son premier opéra, What Next.
