A Swiss-born contemporary composer, Ernest Bloch expressed his Jewish heritage in his music. He emigrated to the United States in 1916 and became an American citizen in 1924. He directed the Cleveland Institute from 1920 to 1925 and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 1925 to 1930.

| Bloch's most characteristic compositions are of Jewish inspiration, in particular his Suite hébraïque (Hebrew Suite) for viola or violin and orchestra, Baal Shem for violin and piano, later orchestrated, and Schelomo for cello and orchestra. His Concerto Grosso No. 1 and Concerto Grosso n. 2 represent another, neo-classical aspect of Bloch's music.
