Arrigo Boito Life

The Italian composer, poet and musical critic, Arrigo Boito, is chiefly remembered for his work as a librettist.

He revised the libretto to Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra", and provided the composer with the texts for his two Shakespearean operas "Othello" and "Falstaff".

He also created the libretto for Ponchielli's "La Gioconda".

However Boito was also an accomplished operatic composer in his own right.

Arrigo Boito Works

Boito wrote the librettos and music for his operas "Mefistofele", based on Goethe's Faust, and "Nerone" which he left unfinished.

The Prologue, Ave, Signor, for Mephistopheles and the prison scene for the soprano Margaretta (Gretchen) remain familiar recital items.
