Max Bruch

Max Bruch was born in Cologne where he studied music. He held various posts as a teacher, conductor and composer and for a few years was conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. MIDI FILE - from "Scottish Fantasia" for violin and orchestra: 4th Mov. (8'17'') From 1891 he was mainly occupied in Berlin as professor of composition at the Berlin Academy. His choral compositions were often performed during his lifetime, but he is best remembered for his pieces for violin and orchestra.

| By far the best known of all Bruch's works must be the Violin Concerto, Op. 26, to which the "Scottish Fantasy" for solo violin and orchestra is a relatively modest pendant. (6'09'') "Kol Nidrei", for cello and orchestra, based on Hebrew themes, is a major item in cello repertoire, making use of themes from an external source, as Bruch did on other occasions to good effect.
