Caldara is one of the most prolific composers of an unusually productive generation. He held important appointments in Mantua, Rome and Wien, wehn Italian vocal music was in rapid evolution. He was appointed Maestro di cappella to the Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga of Mantua, and he stayed in Rome during 1708, where he came into contact with Handel, Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti. While Caldara's output includes a variety of instrumental pieces, the great bulk of his music (over 3.400 items) comprises vocal works. |
