An ordained priest and important composer of 17th century Italian music. In 1630 Carissimi was appointed maestro di cappella at the St. Apollinare church of the Collegio Germanico-Ungarico in Rome, an important Jesuit educational establishment. |
Carissimi's many compositions include various works for church performance, Mass settings, cantatas and motets. His 14 Latin oratorios are of particular interest and he developed the form of this genre. These include Belshazzars' Feast, under the title Baltazar and a dramatic musical version of the story of Jephtha. |
