Italian opera composer important for his influence on the verismo school, before the rise to fame of Puccini. Alfredo Catalani wrote many operas, the most successful of which was "La Wally".

The opera La Wally, first performed at La Scala Milan in 1892, is set in the Tyrol and makes use of local colour from its village setting.
