| Antônio Carlos Gomes was the greatest brazilian composer. He was born in Campinas on July 11 1839 and died in Belém on September 16 1896. In Brazil he composed A noite do castelo (The night of the castle) in 1861 and Joana de Flandres (Joan of Flandres) in 1863, both in Portuguese. Than the emperor of Brazil sent him to study in Milan, where he composed his most famous opera, Il Guarany, in 1870. After that, he composed Fosca (1873), Salvatore Rosa (1874), Maria Tudor (1879), Lo Schiavo (1889) and Condor (1891). He also composed "Modinhas", a brazilian Lied, like Suspiros D'alma (Soul's breath) and Quem Sabe? (Who knows?).
