Johann Leo Hassler Life


Johann Hassler was son of Isaak Hassler, a composer by Nuremberg.

In 1584, Hassler left Nuremberg to continue his education in Venice, where he came into contact with a number of leading musicians, including Andrea Gabrieli.

In 1586 he was appointed chamber organist in Augsburg; in 1596 he met Praetorius, at Gröningen near Halberstadt, and in 1601 he returned to Nuremberg as director of town music.

Hassler was a rare phenomenon in the history of late 16th centiry Protestant music: his training as a Kantor was not academic, unlike that of so many great figures of his days.

His native town Nuremberg characterized him as "Musicus inter Germanos sua aetate summus", an epitaph that he fully merits.
