Clément Janequin worked as a singer and choirmaster before enrolling at the Paris Conservatoire and eventually entering the service of the King of France. - MIDI FILE - Le chant des oyseaux (5'25'') He was ordained a priest and published two Masses, but he is best known as a master of the French chanson of the period.

| Janequin wrote a number of psalm settings and chansons spirituelles (Spiritual Songs) and an even greater number of secular chansons. - MIDI FILE - "La Guerre" (6'54'') - MIDI FILE - "Il estoit une fillette" (1'18'') Of these La bataille (The Battle) is particularly well known, with the imitative La chasse (The Hunt), Le chant des oiseaux (The Song of the Birds) and Les cris de Paris (The Street Cries of Paris).
