| Herman D. Koppel represents the oldest generation in contemporary Danish Music. Due to his Jewish origin, he had to flee during World War II, and the war years left deep mark on him. Several of his compositions reflects the insupportable memories of Nazi barbarism, the most important, Requiem, has been viewed as a kind of parallel to Britten's War Requiem.Since his debut in 1930 he has also been admired as a virtuoso pianist.
