Fritz Kreisler Life

One of the most distinguished and best-loved violinists of all time, Fritz Kreisler was born in Vienna and became a student at the Conservatoire at the age of seven.

Later he entered the Paris Conservatoire where he studied under Joseph Massart.

His subsequent international career, interrupted briefly by medical studies and a period of military service, consolidated his position as a leading virtuoso.

Kreisler was also a composer of some note and he wrote a series of brief encore pieces, well suited to the requirements of the recording studio in his time.

These took the form of arrangements and transcriptions.

He also wrote a controversial number of pieces believed to be the works of past composers, until he admitted they were his own.

These too have become a standard part of violin repertoire.

Kreisler was much admired for his effortless perfomance as well as for his vibrato technique applied to fast as well as slow notes.

Kreisler became a United States citizen in 1943.

Fritz Kreisler Works

Kreisler made useful additions to violin repertoire in his many transcriptions, short compositions of acknowledged authorship and a series of pieces he attributed to lesser known 18th century composers, but were in fact his own work.

Original compositions include the well known Liebesleid (Sorrow of Love) and its counterpart, Liebesfreud (Joy of Love), transcribed for piano by Rachmaninov, and the pastiche Praeludium and Allegro he attributed to Pugnani.
