Magister Leoninus (Leonin, Leo?) was a composer of organum. He
is credited by the theorist Anonymous IV with perhaps the greatest single achievement in
the development of early polyphony: the creation of the "Magnus liber".
Leonin is usually associated with the cathedral of Notre Dame in
Paris: this because the "Magnus liber" as it now survives is liturgically
designed for use in Notre Dame, and because Anonymous IV referred to the books of
polyphony which were initiated by him and modified by Perotinus
as remaining in use in the choir of the cathedral in the early 13th century.
