Benedetto Marcello Life

 

A more prolific composer than his elder brother Alessandro Marcello, Benedetto wrote stage works, church, secular vocal and instrumental music.

Formerly a lawyer, Marcello studied music under Lotti and Gasperini.

In his book "Il teatro alla moda", published around 1720, Marcello gives a satirical account of contemporary operatic practice.

Benedetto Marcello's compositions include a set of twelve concerti for strings, as well as sets of sonatas for one and two cellos.

His best known work is Estro poetico-armonico, a monumental work in eight volumes.
