From 1867, Martucci studied at the Naples Conservatory, where his teachers included
Beniamino Cesi, a pupil of Thalberg, for the piano, and Paolo
Serrao for composition. As concertist, he won praise from Liszt and Anton Rubinstein.
In 1880 Martucci abandoned the life of the touring virtuoso when he
was appointed professor of piano at the Naples Conservatory: he began to conduct in 1881.
In 1883 he commemorated Wagner's death
with a concert at Naples, and five years later he conducted the Italian première of
"Tristan und Isolde".
In 1902 he returned to the Naples Conservatory as director, a post
he held until his death.
