Metastasio was an Italian poet and librettist: his librettos were set over 800 times by different composers during the 18th and early 19th centuries and acquired a reputation unmatched in the history of opera. Metastasio wrote librettos for 27 three-act heroic operas, several short dramatic works of the "azione teatrale" type, 8 oratorios, and many serenatas, lyrical poems and canzonettas: he was sufficiently skilled in music to be able to set some of his own verses as well. He worked in Rome, Naples, Venice, and Vienna, where he dead. His librettos were used for the operas of: Agricola, Anfossi, J.C. Bach, Bertoni, Bianchi, Bonno, Cafaro, Caldara, Cherubini, Cimarosa, Colla, Conforto, di Maio, Fiorillo, Galuppi, Gassmann, Gatti, Gluck, Handel, Hasse, Jommelli, Lampugnani, Latilla, Leo, Mayr, Mercadante, Meyerbeer, W.A. Mozart, Nasolini, Paer, Pampani, Porpora, Prati, Pugnani, Rispoli, Sacchini, Sales, Salieri, Sarro, Sarti, Scolari, Traetta, Vinci, Vivaldi.
