| Born London, 2 Aug 1936, English composer: he studied at Durham and became a critic for the "Daily Telegraph"; later he wrote for "The Independent". Most of his compositions date from after his mid-30s and show an atonal development of English rhapsodism, reflecting his interest in Bridge and Bax, on whom he has written.He has also published a study of Schoenberg (1968); in 1966 he married the soprano Jane Manning.
