Krzysztof Penderecki Life

One of the first avant-garde composers to experiment with sounds such as hissing, screeching, sawing etc., Penderecki occupies an important position in the music of his native Poland.

His earlier more experimental musical language was later subtly modified by his return to earlier traditions as a source of inspiration.

In 1961 he was awarded the UNESCO prize for his canon "Threnas", for 52 string instruments and tape, dedicated to the victims of Hiroshima.

He became a teacher at the Yale School of Music in 1975 and he has travelled widely to supervise and conduct his own work.

Krzysztof Penderecki Works

The best known composition by Penderecki is his St. Luke Passion, the Passio et mors domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Lucam, completed in 1965.

This was followed in 1971 by Utrenia, a choral work that deals with the events following the Crucifixion, drawing inspiration from the Orthodox liturgy.
