Pescetti studied under Antonio Lotti (organist at St. Mark's in Venice). He became friendly with his fellow student Baldassare Galuppi. An early mass by the Italian composer impressed J.A. Hasse. In 1736 he replaced Porpora as director of the Opera of the Nobility, the rival company to Handel's. In 1747 he returned to providing operas in Venice. |
Pescetti's opera arias are notable for their easily singable lines, simple accompaniments, short, clearly articulated phrases and restricted harmonic vocabulary. He wrote more than 25 operas, sacred and instrumental music (organ and harpsichord works). |
