Goffredo Petrassi

Petrassi entered the Conservatory of St. Cecilia in Rome in 1928, as student of composition and organ. In 1932 Petrassi won a competition organized by the Sindacato Nazionale dei Musicisti; in the same year Casella conducted the piece of Petrassi as the only Italian contribution to the ISCM Festival at Amsterdam, and it was quickly taken up by conductors in other countries. From 1934 to 1936 he taught harmony, counterpoint and choral composition at the Accademia di S. Cecilia in Rome. He was general director of La Fenice di Venezia, by which time he had already been appointed to the chair of composition at the Conservatory of S. Cecilia, where he remained for 20 years. He has given composition courses in Austria (Mozarteum, Salzburg) and the USA (Tanglewood) and has conducted in various parts of the world. In 1959, on Pizzetti's retirement, he left his post at the Conservatory in order to take over the advanced composition course at the Accademia di S. Cecilia. His Italian pupils include A. Clementi, Porena, Guaccero, Panni.

shown remarkable powers of self-renewal, and has written in a great variety of styles.
After Dallapiccola he is the most important and influential Italian musician of his generation.
