| A distinguished German pianist, Reinecke held concerts in Germany, Sweden and Copenhagen where, from 1846 to 1848, he was pianist to King Christian VIII. He also built a considerable reputation as a conductor, composer and teacher. From 1860 to 1895 he conducted the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig and, at the same time, taught piano and composition at the Conservatoire, where Grieg, Sinding and Arthur Sullivan were among his pupils.
