| At first trained in law, the French composer and conductor Joseph Guy Ropartz studied composition with Massenet and then with César Franck. He spent much of his career in Nancy and then in Strasbourg, before retiring to his native Brittany, this last a continuing influence on his music.

| Ropartz wrote five symphonies; his La chasse du Prince Arthur (The Hunt of Prince Arthur) turns for inspiration to Celtic legend. Six string quartets and three violin sonatas bear witness to the skill of Ropartz in handling chamber music forms, as well as two sonatas for cello and piano. Ropartz made some contribution to sacred music, notably in his Requiem of 1938.
