Sacchini was an Italian composer and he was a leading figure in serious opera of the late 18th century. He studied harpsichord, organ and composition with Durante, who esteemed him higly and predicted that he would be the best composer of the century. In 1722 Sacchini moved to London - where he remained for ten years - when he met Traetta. Sacchini left England in 1781 and went to Paris: he was already famous there because of performances of his operas. The success of his operas had delighted the Piccinni supporters, who attempted to draw Sacchini to Paris as an ally in their struggle with the Gluck supporters. He wrote more than 40 operas, oratorios, sacred and vocal music. |
