Karl Stamitz (brother of Johann Anton Stamitz) was born in Mannheim on 7 May, 1746, and after studying the violin under his father, he joined the Mannheim orchestra as second violin.

He went to Paris, in 1770, where he distinguished himself as a performer on the viola.

In 1778, he went to England.

Between 1785 and his death he travelled extensively through Europa, as far as Russia.

He died in Jena in 1801.

Karl Stamitz was much more skilled at composition to his father, Johann Wenzel Stamitz and his music is more complex and cheerful.
