Founder of the Strauss dynasty of Viennese light music composers, Johann the Elder formed his own dance orchestra in 1825 and travelled widely in Europe enjoying great success as a composer, conductor and violinist. After 1835 he provided the dance music for the Austrian Emperors court, turning out large quantities of waltzes, cotillions, galops, quadrilles, polkas and marches.
