Ambroise Thomas  Life

 

French composer; the son of a musician, he studied violin and piano as a child.

He went on to attend the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers were
Kalkbrenner and La Sueur.

After his debut at the Opéra-Comique in 1837 with La double échelle he achieved success with Le Caïd (1849) and Le songe d'une nuit d'été (1850).

The opera with which he finally made his name was Mignon (1866), consolidating his reputation with Hamlet (1868).
