The Romanian-born composer of Greek parentage, Iannis Xenakis began his musical studies in Athens and then went to Paris where he studied under Honegger, Milhaud and Messiaen and adopted French citizenship.

He was one of the most innovative composers of his time employing, among other things, a method whereby mathematics are applied to form a piece of music.

In this connection he founded a School of Mathematical and Automated Music in Paris.

In addition to his theoretical writings and teachings, there are a varied series of compositions, from the orchestral Metastasis of 1954, Pithoprakta and Achoripsis, to the Empreintes of 1975 and the 1979 Pleïades, for percussion.

Other instrumental music includes works for harpsichord, amplified or, in Khoai, unamplified.
