Fiorillo, born in Brunswick, went to London in 1788 and began to play regularly as violist in Salomon's quartet.

He was violinist, violist and composer.

Fiorillo's violin compositions reflect a virtuoso's technique which makes his early retirement from public performance all the more remarkable.

He was a prolific composer, with more than 70 opus numbers and some 200 works to his credit.

His fame today rests on one work, his 36 caprices for violin.

These are studies of good musical quality and they heve taken their place in the violinist's pedagogical repertory beside those of Rode and Kreutzer.
