An associate and trusted collaborator with Debussy, André Caplet won the Prix de Rome in 1901, establishing himself as a composer and later as a conductor of eminence.

He was entrusted by Debussy with completing the orchestration of the former's "Le martyre de Saint-Sébastien" and the direction of its first performance.
