Born Lyons, 28 Feb 1825, died Paris, 9 Apr 1889, French conductor, pedagogue and cornet player.

After leaving the Paris Conservatoire in 1845, he played in salon orchestras and conducted at the Paris Opera before taking up a post as saxhorn professor at a military school.

This eventually led to a professorship of the cornet, his favoured instrument, at the Conservatoire where he had studied as a youth.

There Arban remained until his death with the exception of the years 1874-1880 when he undertook some conducting engagements outside of France.

Today, he is chiefly remembered in brass circles for his cornet treatise "Grande méthode complète pour cornet à pistons et de saxhorn" (Paris, 1864) and for various bravura cornet show-pieces based on popular themes from operas or well-known songs of the day.

Only "Le Carnaval de Venise" holds a place in the repertoire today.
