He spent much of his teaching career in Brussels, where he died in 1870.

A pupil of the Italian violinist Viotti, Bériot became one of the most distinguished players of his time, the creator of the Franco-Belgian school of violin-playing that was so important in the 19th century.

Beriot's ten Violin Concertos are known to most players, in the practice studio if not in the concert hall. The so-called Military Concerto, No. 1 in D major, is of particular interest, with his popular Spanische Weisen for violin duet. |
